Show Spencer- D 700 Q No. 28? A That is a photograph of the south of the river, just the same as the rest of it, just the formation, stuff like that. Q Where was that last photograph? A It is south of the river -- I say south -- it is north of the river; it is in Lime creek, is where it is. Q Have you had occasion to observe floods on the San Juan river? A Yes sir. Q Just tell us about those floods, with particular reference to the time of year that they come. A Well, the spring floods are along in June, about June 10th, the high water, but it is not high -- not what we call a flood; the highest water we have is in September; when the fall rains come, they come all at once; in two or three hours they begin to go down; mud and everything else goes with it. That is what we call the big floods. The spring floods are not half as high as the September floods. Q Do you get those floods in September with considerable regularity, year in and year out? A No sir; some years we don't get any flood at all. Q What is the general situation with reference to then? A Well, there has been years we would have a spring flood, then in September we didn't get the rains from the mountains in the upper country, didn't have a flood; we would have small floods, but nothing high; in 1919, 1920, and 1921, we didn't have any 2668 |
