Show 764 A My brother and myself united in 1911, had two boats, and started at Green River City, Wyoming, on the Green river, and we traveled downstream and went through all of the canyons of the Green river, and from the junction on down to Needles. Afterwards I got a boat and continued on down to the Gulf. Later, in 1921, I was selected by the government to handle their boats on a survey through Cataract canyon, be-ginning at Greenriver, Utah, down to Lees Ferry. That was one hundred and twenty miles, approximately, on the Green river, and the balance on the Colorado, through Cataract cany-on and through Glen canyon. Q When was this first trip you made on the Green and Colorado rivers? A We started September 18, 1911. Q What equipment did you have. A We had two row boats sixteen feet four inches in length -- shall I describe the boats? Q Yes sir. Q The boats were what are called the Galloway type, which had been worked out for the problems of the Colorado river. They are called flat- bottom boats, but they have considerable rocker, about ten- inch rocker from the how to the stern. The bow is two inches higher than the stern, that is, the rocker comes up a little more. The boats had decks at either end, and a hatch covering the top. 2732 |
