Show Spencer- D 702 ' 94, during the panic. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q How many years subsequent to that did you freight down there? A At various times we freighted in there; that used to be our business, when brother and I used to do that contracting. Q Over what period, what number of years? A From 1892 to 1901 we was in that business. Q Now, during that time did you know of any of these prospectors bringing their supplies down boat? A No sir. Q You never took any down by boat? A No sir. Q When these rains come in September, do they fill those dry washes around there pretty rapidly? A Yes sir; they come what we call water- spout time, and come like a cloudburst, come and fill the washes up, maybe twenty feet of water; just last about an hour, sometimes not that long, and the water is gone. Sometimes it comes and covers a big area of country; that makes a big flood; in 1927 down there we was living right above Goodrich, and fifteen feet of water come right off the bluff; didn't have a quarter of a mile to cross, took a car away, took it into the river; just a regular waterspout. Q Have you ever seen the San Juan river when it was so dry that it was not running? 2670 |
