BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Between Green river and the mouth of the San Rafael did you have any other trouble getting across those riffles? A We had considerable trouble getting through what they call the Corkscrew; in fact, we didn't have much control of the boat going through what they called the Corkscrew and the Gimlet -- I don't know any other name for it than that. After we got through that, after rubbing the banks or rocks with the side of the boat, we went into more quiet water, and the river spread out, and we got along very well until we encountered some more sandbars or gravelbars, which we did in several places before we struck the mouth of the Green river. Q You mean the mouth of the San Rafael? A No, the mouth of the Green river, where it empties into the Grand. Q On your second day, from five miles below the moth of the San Rafael, tell us about the second day's run. A I don't recall the distance we made.
