Show Hyde- D 610 A About half- way between the Honaker trail and the bridge, I would say. Q For what purpose was that trail established? A For the purpose all trails are, to ride ponies over and pack grub. Q Mendenhall engaged in placer mining? A Yes, on the low bar in the river canyon. Q Have you ever done any of this placer mining yourself? A Yes, I have done some placer mining myself. Q Did these placer miners in that country have very much in the way of machinery? A No, they didn't. Q What was the usual equipment that was used? A The usual equipment that was used, the most successful ones used, was a little rocker, made by hand; the ordinary hand rocker; they lined the floor of it with burlap sacks or wool blankets and caught the fine flour gold in the burlap. Q How was it extracted from the burlap? A They would wash it out in a gold pan, get all of it out they could that way, put it on and use it again until it began to get worn out, then dry it in the sun, put it in a gold pan, and burn it and get what was left. Q Were you in the country when there was some oil drilling going on? A I was. Q Have you been personally interested in that? A I have, and am still. 2578 |
