Show Hyde- D 615 Q During those high water months of May and June, do you have a steady flow during that time? A It is a pretty steady flow during those months; in July it gets down; some seasons, as I say, it will go dry. Q Have you ever seen the San Juan river dry? A Yes, I have been down in the river bed twice when it was dry; twice we made a solid dam across it and turned it all in our irrigating ditch at Bluff. Q How large was your irrigating ditch? A In working the ditch we instructed the men to clean it the full width of a long- handled shovel; that is the width this was; I guess that is five feet. Q How deep? A After the water was turned in it would be probably eight inches deep, something like that; it run pretty slow; the survey runs on a sixteenth of an inch to the rod; I am not engineer enough to tell the amount of water. Q Have you been down there on horseback on the river when it was dry? A I sure have, and in there afoot. Q How far down the river? A I went down John's canyon once when the river was dry. That was when the Baldin Mining Company was working down about Clay Hill; we had stock in there; I had an Indian with me, George 2583 |
