Un male de Monterico. Family THINOCORID^E. 1. THINOCORUS INGA, Tsch. Fn. Peru. Orn. p. 279. Plusieurs exemplaires des deux sexes, des poussins et des ceufs des environs de Junin. Les ceufs sont ovoconiques comme ceux de Scolopacides et des Cha-radriides. Ils sont de la forme et de la grandeur des ceufs de Totanus ochropus, et par leur coloration ils ressemblent le plus a ceux de YActi-tis hypoleucos, ils ont le fond egalement isabelle, les taches d'un brun tres-fonce, melangees avec d'autres d'un gris violace pale. En les examinant plus attentivement on voit que la maculature est bien differente de celle des ceufs des deux families citees. Les taches sont plus petites et plus nombreuses, constituant des points, des traits et des zigzags plus ou moins subtils, formant une couronne plus ou moins dense autour du gros bout, et plus ou moins nombreuses sur le reste de la surface. La surface de la coque presente une difference plus notable, elle est beaucoup plus polie que dans tous les ceufs des echassiers des families citees, la structure de la coque est beaucoup plus compacte, les inegalites beaucoup plus petites. M . des Murs se guidant par la ressemblance superficielle des carac-teres oologiques a range la tribu des Thinocorides dans Tordre des Gralles, parmi les Cariamides et les Charadriides. Pour appuyer son opinion il cite un passage de Lafresnaye*, dans lequel a vrai dire il n'y a qu'un seul argument qui serait: " les matelots du 'Beagle' les appelaient les Becassines a bee court," tandis que les autres details prouvent que ce sont des Gallinaces. Plusieurs autres ornithologistes eminents sont d'accord avec M . des Murs; G. R. Gray dans sa derniere edition du 'Catalogue du Musee Britannique' les a places parmi les families des Glareolides et des Chionides. Eu comparant les ceufs de Thinocorus avec ceux des Gangas (Pterocles) on voit qu'ils different seulement par la forme (cylindrique dans ces derniers), et que tout les autres caracteres sont communs : la structure et la surface de la coque, ainsi que la coloration. II serait done bien plus naturel de considerer les ceufs des Thinocorides comme representant dans Tordre des Gallinaces ce que sont les ceufs des Guillemots dans Tordre des Palmipedes, egalement comme le dit M . des Murs par rapport aux ceufs de Pteroclides "ces ceufs representant exactement dans Tordre des Gallinaces ce que sont les ceufs * Traite genernl d'Oologie Ornith. p. 370. |
