UT Wood Road The Wood Road (c. early 1890s, Site #16) begins at the intersection of South Street and East Street (Grafton Road) and heads south toward the cemetery before winding up the steep mountainside to the plateau above. Named for its purpose, the road was used by the pioneers to haul large timbers from the Mt. Trumbull sawmill in nearby Arizona and the mesa above town. The road follows a deep arroyo (dry drainage) and then follows switchbacks up the mountainside (Photos Z-AA). Excavated into the rocky hillside, the wagon trail is further fortified by numerous rock retaining walls, many of which are located on steep unstable drainage paths (Photo BB). A substantial wall near the mesa is constructed of both wood and rock and remains in very good condition more than one hundred years after it was built. The road has deteriorated and eroded badly over the course of many years, and large exposed rocks have made it impassable except on foot. The road is roughly two miles long and gains approximately fifteen hundred feet in elevation. Contributing Resources Buildings 1. Schoolhouse/Meeting House (c. 1886, Site #1) 2.
