Show In 2000, the ceiling in the back room was replaced with tongue and groove batting. Interior wood trim was replaced. Cellar vents were restored and the kitchen masonry wall was refinished with a slick wash and painted. New shingles were placed on the portion of roof not shingled in 1999. In 2001, log fencing (cedar post/barbed wire) was constructed in front of the Wood home running north and west. Historic period style fencing (post and pole construction) was constructed on the western end of the road leading to the Dave Ballard home. In 2003, windows and new front (east elevation) porch railings were installed. Between 1999 and 2003, three fired brick chimneys were rebuilt. John Wood Sr. Barn : In 1999, this building was in an advanced state of deterioration. The low-pitched roof had largely collapsed in on itself. The building was rebuilt in 2000. According to the contractor, the roof pitch matches what is shown in a historic photograph that was provided by the property owner at the time the new roof was construction. The building was disassembled, logs numbered and reassembled in their original position. Corner posts were encased with concrete below grade for reinforcement. Recycled dry-laid basalt stones were used at grade as foundation stones in between corner posts. The floor plan of the building has changed from the original. In order to accommodate the lengths of usable original logs, the southern end of the building was stepped in one foot on the east/west elevations. John Wood Sr. Granary: In 1998, this structure was raised, leveled and reset on native stone supports rather that the original juniper corner posts. The existing roof was placed sometime prior to 1998. David Ballard Home: In 2001, the rear roof addition was rebuilt with new rafters and roof decking and wood shingled . In 2003, repair/replacement of materials in kind was done on the front porch. Also in 2003 new wood railing was installed around the perimeter of the front porch. David Ballard Barn : No Change David Ballard (Shed)/Movie set building? (Historic Site Form/photograph K) : This building collapsed in on itself sometime in 2005. Note: According to Tim Ballard (deceased) this building was supposedly used as the "makeup room" as part of the movie set for Ramrod (circa 1947). It is unknown if this building was built in place or moved to its present location . Granary (east of Ballard House): No Change Dugout/Building foundation: Russell Bezette informally excavated this in 2001 down to floor level. Artifacts recovered from the excavation were turned over to the Grafton Heritage Partnership. Cemetery: In 2004 the wood enclosure surrounding the headstones of the Berry family was completely rebuilt. New fence posts, rails and slats were replaced in-kind with the exception of the material used. The original fence slats and structural members were made of pine and red cedar was used as replacement material to ward off termite infestation. Juniper posts, sided with dimensional lumber, were used as in original construction. Top cap spindles were placed on fence posts that had been missing for many years. The spindles were designed from details rendered from historic photographs. A wood routed sign (Grafton Cemetery) was placed on the northwest corner of the cemetery in 2004. |
