Mary Ann was baptized into the Church on March 4 1862. She, with her parents and her older sister Lucy, left Florence on July 22, 1862, by wagon with the Homer Duncall Company. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley , September 24, 1862. Her parents settled in Ogden, Utah, where Mary Ann resided until her death almost seventeen years later. Mary Ann married John Hastings, Jr., June 20, 1870, in the Endowment House at Salt Lake City, Utah. They were the parents of eight children, all of them born in Ogden. Mary Ann was a wonderful mother and wife. She endured all of the hardships and challenges of pioneer life. She was very young, only thirty-seven years old, when she died. At eighteen, she was introduced to the message of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When she was ready to join, she told her father and he told her to leave his home. Sarah left and found work in a hotel and was baptized a member of the Church. In June, 1856, she secured a job as a cook on the ship, "Wellfleet," and sailed for America. After her arrival in Boston, she obtained work as a pastry cook at a hotel. In 1859, Sarah and William crossed the Plains in the Edward Stevenson Wagon Company, arriving in the Salt Lake Valley on September 16, 1859, and settling in the Cottonwood area. In November, 1861, they volunteered to go to "Dixie." and moved to the Grafton area, camping in their wagon box for the entire winter until they could secure a home.
