Show Work Completed on Contributing Resources at Grafton, Utah Post 1999: Schoolhouse/Meeting Hall: Rehabilitation of this structure was completed in 2000 by a local general contractor (Sun Design). Architectural renderings to guide the rehabilitation work were drafted by Campbell and Associates of St. George, Utah. Exterior work included: replacement of new adobes where needed, repointing of existing adobe, replacement/repair of eave and fascia, placement of new double hung wood sash windows (should have been six over six divided lite), placement of newly constructed double entry doors, new wood shingled roof and bell tower with applied stain for a weathered appearance. All exterior wood surfaces were scraped and painted. Interior work included: Installation of an interior wood frame support system to improve building stability, wall/ceiling plaster repair, and all wall surfaces were scraped and painted with a color that matched historic finishes based on paint chip analysis. The non-historic wood floor was sanded. Russell Home (Alonzo/Nancy): In 2001 mortar joints on the foundation of the home was completed. Repointing matched original mortar and joints in terms of color, texture, depth, and width. loose stones were reset and mortar joints cleaned on the cellar walls. In 2003, exterior stucco related to the movie set era, was removed in order to gain access to adobe brick for condition evaluations. Rehabilitation work began when the building was reroofed, had extensive adobe replacement on west and east upper story walls, installation of new windows/doors/hardware, and reconstruction of an interior staircase. Reconstruction efforts also included two interior fireplaces and associated chimneys (fired brick) as well as the front porch and rear building attachment (kitchen). The adobe brick on the exterior was left exposed. Exterior wood surfaces were oiled only so they are allowed to weather. The major portion of the rehabilitation work was completed in 2004. Log Cabin (Louisa Maria Russell): In 1999, the exterior wall logs were re-chinked, ground level logs structurally reset, replaced deteriorated logs, replaced flooring in back rood, and rebuilt an adobe interior wall. Also, the front room floor was re-Iaid, the exterior adobe chimney rebuilt and repair/replacement of adobes on the gable end on the east elevation was completed. In 2000, shingle bats were replaced on exterior siding. Interior doorlwindow/base board trim was replaced. The living room ceiling was raised and metal bracing installed. Seismic reinforcement was installed in the attic space tying the two adobe gable ends together. Also in 2000, a fence (cedar post and wire/picket combination) was installed on the north elevation and an interior chimney frame was restored in the southeast corner of the rear addition. In 2001, the attic floor was removed and reset, interior door trim prepped and painted, and a small wall shelf was framed and shelving installed between the two main rooms. Shed (louisa Maria Russell): Raised and leveled with approximately 40% of historic building fabric replaced in-kind (1999). John Wood Sr. Home: In 1999, exterior fired brick was replaced/repointed where needed. The rear cellar entrance was rebuilt with basalt wall stone replacements, stairs, and new door case and lintel. 1x6 pine skirting was installed around the front porch. Damaged floorboards were replaced and the firebox in the interior fireplace was repointed. Kitchen cabinets were removed (only one original and badly deteriorated). A portion of the roof was reshingled, side porches on the south and north elevations were reconstructed and living room walls were replastered (chicken wire/concrete masonry plaster). |
