Please register me for: [J Conference and Luncheon ($10.00) The visits proved to be a mini "Know Your Community Study!" We picked three possible sites for a debate: Symphony Hall, the Tabernacle, and the Capitol Theater. The F_irst Presidency of the LOS Church wrote us that they would not permit the Tabernacle to be used, but would support the debates held in Salt Lake. Among the things I learned: Salt Lake has a fine Convention and Visitors Bureau; Salt Lake has wonderful communicaiton facilities; there are more than 5000 hotel rooms within a five block radius of the Salt Palace; Salt Lake City is a 2 1/2 hour flight from one-half of the population of the country. During the projected times of the debates in 1988 the lnteramerican Press Association will be meeting in Salt Lake. (Wouldn't a presidential debate focusing on foreign policy here preceding or following the convention have been a natural?) We ·found that Salt Lake City could easily meet the aiteria as a site, so the Board voted to submit the proposal. We had suburb assistance from Chip Lacure of the Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau. Thirty-six Leagues submitted bids: ten sites were chosen for follow-up visits from the national staff. Vicky Harian, Debates Manager, visited Salt Lake on June 2 and 3. Again the community support and Chip Lacure were absoutely fantastic. Media coverage was enthusiastic. Madge suggested an outstanding guest list to answer Vicky's questions for a small dinner hosted by the Salt Lake Sheraton Hotel. We were impressed again by the support the community gave us and Vicky was impressed by the facilities Salt Lake offers. Conference only ($4.00) Luncheon only ($6.00) Check Enclosed.
