The Salt Lake School Districfs Equivalancy Committee Report on the four Salt lake High Schools has been released. The equivalency committee was established after the high 3chool boundaries were closed in t 984 in 8n effort to offer equivalent education to all city students. The committee> w·ith representatives from the four high schools_. looked at some data including test scores., course offerings and pupil-teacher ratios. The report recognizes that test 3Co re3., a3 a measure of effective ne3s of education at the high school level~ must be judged in the light of the educational preparation of the studenb coming into a particular sy5tem. Test ::;core~ from elementary schools and middle schools v/ere also examined. The committee recommended U1at the district continue to look at test scores through i 988. They noted that numerical equity among the four high schools does not begin to solve all of the problem, of equivalent and qualit•J education in Salt Lake City. Some specific recommendations include greater consideration of the elementary and intermediate preparation of studenfa., preparation of a magter plan for the whole education 3ystem based on long range go&l:s I greater attention to the problems of minority students., fe---,1er interruptions to teaching ti me and academic counseling beginning at the elementary level.
