Show PROGRAM MAKING MEETING MONDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1987, 7:30 P.M. ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH 1070 FOOTHILL DRIVE All league members are urged to come to the program making meeting. where League grass roots action begins--with YOU! This is What is Program Making? Each year at this time local leagues gather to review current positions and discuss new study options. Local league program is set yearly while national and state programs are established on alternate years for two-year periods. This year we will consider the 1987-88 program for the Salt Lake League and the 1987-89 program for the LWV of Utah. Program Making Agenda On February 9, Salt Lake League members will discuss (1) readoption of current state and local program positions and (2) new study options. Remember that program making is the first step of a process that provides positions from which league influence can be felt in our community. We cannot take a stand as a league unless our members have studied an issue and arrived at consensus, thereby establishing a position. That is the grass roots strength of the League of Women Voters. League positions, reached after member study and consensus, remain a part of the league program as long as they are reaffirmed. Part of the program making agenda is to consider the current program positions and to recommend that we reaffirm, drop or update them. What Happens After the Meeting? The Salt Lake and Utah boards wi 11 meet to formulate a "recommended program based on the program making meeting. The boards' recommendations will be voted on at Annual Meeting and State Convention,11 along with any 11 other program suggestions from the program making meeting as non-recommended program items. To be considered at either of these meetings, program items must have been presented at the program making meeting. 11 New Studies When considering issues for new studies, consider League criteria. The issue must fit League principles. It must be an issue that needs governmental action. It must be timely and one on which the League can make a contribution. Options must exist for citizen action. We also need to consider whether there is member interest and commitment about the issue and ,,hether we have or can get the funds necessary to conduct the study. The study must fit as part of a total workable program. If there is an item you would like to see the league study and it fits into the new study criteria, this is your chance to have it considered. Come to the program making meeting and lobby for it. -3- February 1 987 |
