Show 4TH UTAH CONFERENCE ON ETHICS HEALTH & DOLLARS: & HEALTH MORAL IMPLICATION OF COST-CONSCtOU S CARE When: Thursday & Friday, May 15 - 16, Where: Oiptn Union, University of Utah 8:45 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. The objective of the Utah Conference on Eth~cs and Hea,th is to bring together members of the community interested in ethical issue$ posed by the contemporary pract·ice of medicine. The conference ~ffers participants the opportu n ity to tearn f(om major scholars in the field and to engage in discussions of iseues of particular interest to them~ This year's conference wilt treat the ethical is$ues raised by cost-consciou s decision-mak ing in health care. As the percentage of GNP devot~d to health care ri&e, beyond 10%, cost control has been increasingly emphasiz.ed. New federal regulation& have been put ·into effect, new insurance and physician det Ivery systems have been developed, competition and for-profit medtcine have grown, and discussion concerning the rationing of health ca~e has increased. Will it alter th~ relationship between patients and various providers of h e a f t h c a r e .s o t h a t p a t i e n t s .r J n t e r e s t s a r e- n o t p r op e r t y r e & p e c t e d ? Wh a t i s mean t by r a t i on i n g a n d i a i t n e c ea s a r y? I f i t i & ne c e s s a r y , how should it be done? Wi ti new developments reduce access to he a l th .care for executives, lawyers, I a r g e s e gme n ts of the pop u t at i on , par t i cu l a r f y the poor and unemployed? Are we realty spending too much on health care and are we now using health care doltars efficiently? How are other societies deaJing with these issues and what can we learn from them? The principal faculty for the conference will be Samuel Goroviti and Richard Berman. Or. Gorovitz, Prof. of Philosophy at the Univer,ity o. f Mar y l and , i & a n at i on a I i y rec o g n i zed author i t y i n the f i e J d. of medical ethics. He is an author and was principal scholar for the PBS series on medical ethics. Dr. Berman ls a Prof. of Health Care Management at the New York University School of Medicine and Exec. Vice Pre&. of the NYU Medical Center . He has held positions with the U.S. Public Meal th Service and Departm.ent·o f HEW. They will be assisted by local hea,th care specialists who will lead particu~ar special topics session&. Physicians, nurses~ health care administrato rs, insura~ce social workersf clergy, un•iversity faculty and studentsr and others concerned with the delivery of health care will find thls conference interesting and informative. Continuing education credits wi ti be available through various profe&sional organizatton s. REGISTRATION: There is no conference fee.
