Admission Free , The Natura} Resources Law Forum presents an annual educational symposium that explores a timely natural resource Issue for the benefit of students, Jawyers, natura1 resource professionals, members of government, and the community at large. This years topic - groundwater protection - was chosen because it is both an important and timely issue for the state of Utah. Over 95% of Utah's water suppJy Is 1n the r orm or groundwater. The continued quality or that supply is necessary to both the present and future demands of industria1, agricultural and domestic users. Once contaminated, groundwater is vlrtua1ly 1mposslble to clean up. The Utah Dept. of Health is now in the last stages of formulating a groundwater protection strategy which will set the tone for regulation of groundwater contamination for some time to come. The strategy will be f o11owed by promulgation and implementation of regulations, which in turn wi11 require funding to be effective. The symposium Includes both speakers and a moderated panel. Policymakers wi11 exolain Utah's strategy; examine it in light of current and upcoming federal regulation, and compare it to strategies adopted by ne1ghbortng states. There will be technical presentations explaining The panel will include aquifers, contamination and monitoring. representatives of agricultural, industrial, municipal and environmental Interests who w111 present and d1scuss with policy-makers their viewpoints as to the suggested scope of future regulations.
