Show A Holiday Note from Kathy Fahy Dear League Members. This is a belated thanks for the wonderful Tribune cartoon I received fron you before l left SLC. Although my waUs are still bare - it takes a long time to unpack.- it will hang in a place of honor_ I have joined the San Antonio League. Although SA has about 1 million people. it"s League is nearly the same size as SLC"s_ Our Legislature, bigger but not much better than Utah"s, meets beginning in January. I plan to help the League with pre-legislati ve interviews. The Texas skiing can·t compare with Utah"s slopes but 60 degree winters are more to my liking. Thanks again and best wishes for the coming year_ PAY EQUITY: THE VALUE OF HUMAN WORK ?I The Utah Pay Equity Coalition was begun about a year ago. This group consists of Volunteer Women from the Chamber of Commerce, Utah Public Employees ASSOCistionjl Phoenix Institute Women in Bu5i ness (WI B) and ~verel other orgenizetion, in the Salt Lake., Provo and Ogden areas. All these represented groups are concerned 'w'ith inequities 1n pay scales of jobs that are traditionally., predominantly held by 'w'omen and minorities as compared to the 3C31e3 for tho3e jobn3 held by predominantly white males. This group made vslient efforts to present a symposium early last June to begin informing and educating people in our aree about Pay Equity. Ho'w'ever, due to schedule conflicts with other organizational functions on the same date, ii lack of adequate funds, and maybe disproportion of zea1 vs. staff and st re ngt h of orga ni zati on that SJJmposi um was cancelled. Undaunted, the group is taking a fresh look at planning an educational semi nat for sometime this year. While the LWV-Salt Lake is unable to contribute money to this group., -w-e have agreed to contribute our support in lei nd. As part of that effort., I plan several short informative articles in the Voter about Pay Equity: .....-hat it meansjl 'w'hat effects it may have, ho'w' it has been accomplished in other states., ho¥ it might be brought about in Utah., and what the Coalition is trying to do. I hope that many of you 'w'ill find here e cause that effects you and your social concern for equality in the 'w'Ork place. As a single parent .. I ft nd it easy to put my efforts into this topic and I also see that ultimately it effects each member of all fam111es rel IJ1 ng on salaried 1ncome to survive- - -that's just about all of u, !
