Show PRESS RELEASE Recommendations for the observance of United Nations Day on October 24 in several Utah cities including Salt Lake City 'w'ere made in a statement by Oren A. Nelson, who has been appointed as Utah's United Nations Day Chairman for 1986 by Governor Bangerter. '"In 1985", said Ne 1son. ·salt Lake city 'w'as joined by Logan and Ogden in observances of United Nations Day, 'w'ith proclaimations issued by the three Mayors and with appropiate community activities. My hope is that more Utah cities wil 1 join in the 1 986 observances and that pub 1ic meetings wil 1 be included with speakers addressing three areas of pressing concern to the United Nations and to al 1 humanity. ·First is an immediate cessation of all nuclear weapons testing -- an obligation a555umed by the 5Uperpo'w'er5 under the 1968 Hon-proliferation Treaty 5igned by 127 nations 'w'ith ful 1 comp 1iance by the superpo'w'ers 1ong overdue. For the past 13 months 'w'e have had on 1y partial comp 1iance. The Soviet Union has been comp 1ying; 'w'e have not, and are resisting comp 1iance. "Second is an effective international outlawing and ostracism of nations which practice aparthied and racism. No oppression of b 1ack majorities by 'w'hite minorities or of white minorities by black majorities should be tolerated by member nations of the United Nations. " Third is the preservation of outer space under United Nations supervision as an invio 1ate domain for peaceful coexistence, inc 1uding peaceful use by a11 nations. Congressional funding of Star Wars threatens to make outer space a 'w'ar zone. " The U AU wil 1 endeavor to recommend speakers in those areas of concern wherever in Utah such cooperation is needed. "The Salt Lake observance "will be he 1d on Friday, October 24 at 7:30 pm in the Westminster Payne Gymnasium, 'Ylith the participation of the Westminster Symphonic Band, conducted by Robert Lentz, and speakers to cover the three areas of concern, which I be 1eive to be the most pressingn. -Charles Freed The Council of Organizations of the UNAU in which the LWV is represented by Leisa Manuel has chosen the U. N. Da~, Observance at Westminster Co 11 ege as their concerted event for the month of October. WORLD CAPITAL FLOWS TO I NOUS TR I AL I ZED NAT I ONS According to a World Bank report, industrialized nations are absorbing more capital from deve 1oping nations than they extend to them. The report points out that overfl o\v's from debtor nations to industrialized countries exceeded inflows by $22 bill ion in 1985. This is compared to 1981 w'hen more than $30 billion \v'ent to Third World Countries over the amount they sent to the industrialized nations. Salt Lue Voter -Deanna Cl ark -14- October 1986 |
