Show ACID RAIN SO~THING IS •BEING •DONE Emily Hall In 1983 the Western Governors' Association tmder the chairmanship of Scott . Matheson offered constructive suggestions for amendments to the Clean Air Act . They also adopted a detailed statement on acid rain control legislation which: A.. ) B.) C~) encouraged the most cost-effective emission reductions; relied pri.rr.arily on states to implement emission reductions; did not impose nationwide costs while providing only regional benefits; D.) recognized regional differences in size and ty1-,e of emissions, climate, arid topography; and E~) mimimized emissions from new sources through the application of Best Available Control Technology. Following up in August 1985, the Western Governors' Association with Governor Nonnan Bangerter as vice chainnan and r:iavernor Richard Lamm, chairman, reaffinned its support for previous policy statements, including the development of a western acid rain control strategy. At a follow~up meeting of Air Quality specialists from the Western States, which I attended as a member of the Ptah Air Conservation Committee, three task forces were set up. Their purpose is to inventory the present status of acid deposition research in each state, evaluate the adequacy of tools for measuring acid deposition and keep the other states informed of progress and findings . At present, State and Federal Government and private industry are all doing acid deposition testing with conflicting and overlapping reports . . 111is project sponsored by the Western governors is an attempt to coordinate this data and find out where we stand. .A.re our high lakes vulnerable to acid rain? Where is it coming from? hbat is the status of our soils and forests? Are the plankton and fish populations diminishing? 'When reports are in we should know more about acid rain problems and be better able to work on constructive solutions. Save Our Canyons .Meeting A group called Save Our Canyons, active in the past, is getting reorganized. Recent developments proposed, such as ski lifts in White Pine in Little . Cottonwood Canyon, and a sewer in Big Cottonwood Can.yon that would allow increased development there, have created a need for this group to reactivate itself. They will meet. for a slide show and discussion of issues at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, at Zion Lutheran Church. People who are inter~sted in the Wasatch canyons' future are invited. They need your contributions a.nd ideas! Emily Hall SALT LAKE VOTER December 1985 |
