I VA TE SECTOR: KEYS TO TH I RD WORLD DEVELOPMENT Government owned corporat1ons are commonplace 1n tne Ttllrd world. However an increasing number of countries are finding that government ownership slows economic gro'w'th and cost vasts amounts of money. As a result, many countries have begun privatizing to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Before privatization can take pl ace p 1ace effective 1y, a healthy private sector must exist. Many deve 1oping countries have 1ittl e or no private sector; stock markets are virtual 1y non-existent, meaning there is 1ittl e chance for investment and the trading of equity shares, and per capita income is 1O'w', meaning widespread capital is not avail ab 1e to invest. The United States, through the Agency for International Deve 1opment, enc our ages developing nations to privatize and provides technical assistance to countries where privatization has begun. A ID does this through techno 1ogy transfer, investment promotion, management development, 3mal l and medium-seal e enterpri3e development, rural industries and export deve 1opment. World'w'ide examples of prh-·atization include: 1. Telephone and telegraph companies are being so 1d to the private sector in Bangladesh, Mexico, Thailand, South Korea, May1 aysia and Sri Lanka. 2. Air 1ines are being so 1d to the private sector in Th ail and, Singapore, Bangladesh, Mayl asia, South Korea, Spain and Turkey. 3. Pub 1ic housing is being so 1d to the tenants in the Peop 1e·s Repub 1ic of China. - Deanna Cl ark AGENDA FOR SECURJTY DISCUSS10N/B1EFING FOR UNITS Monday - September 29, 1986 - 7:00pm - at the League Office COME FOR THE DISCUSSION TIPS OR FOR THE WINE, APPLE JU]CE AND CHEESE!
