The commissary, Father Xuares, and the governor, together with almost all of the officers, were in favor of sending the remaining ships along the coast in search of Panuco, the remainder of the company following along shore. Alvar Nufiez Cabeza de Vaca most strenuously opposed this course, although it was finally determined upon, notwithstanding the latter’s statement that the ships would never be seen again. So certain was he of his judgment on this matter that he took the precaution to have a notarial certificate made that he had so advised the governor, and Narvdez did the same in order that his course might be justified.
