Before returning to Santa Fé, De Vargas went to the old pueblo of Jemez, where he recovered the remains of Fr. Juan de Jesus, killed in the revolt of 1680; these were taken to Santa Fé and were reinterred in the chapel at Santa Fé on the 11th of August.*°* About a week after De Vargas had returned to Santa Fé some of the ee ena num- aE the prisoners, who ee Sere 5: and - in the villages, on siderable stores found bered three hundred and sixty-one. Then setting fire to both villages, he withdrew to San Diego and thence to Santa Fé.
