Show LEADING 184 MEXICAN OF NEW FACTS HISTORY Arriving at the port of Colima, Alarcon came across the fleet of Pedro Alvarado, and on account of some conflict of authority, he delivered his report to Don Luis del Castillo and sailed away at night, as he says ‘‘to avoid scandal.’’ Afterwards he was directed by the viceroy to renew his efforts to communicate with Coronado but the expedition never sailed. Coronado’s command was most anxious to proceed with the march to the north. The experiences they had gone through in the journey from Compostella to Culiacan were of CORONADO’S JOURNEY FROM the greatest value. He made selection of seventy-five or eighty cavaliers, principally his personal friends, and twenty-five or thirty foot-soldiers and, with these, equipped for rapid marching, he hastened forward, clearing the way for the main body of the army, which was to follow more slowly, starting a fortnight after his departure. Under the orders of the viceroy, he named Hernandarias Saavedra, his lieutenant, to replace him in the government of the province during his absence, and Don Tristan de Arellano was appointed to succeed him im command of the army.
