Show Rose (1/25/83) page 29 star, 2 purple hearts, 5 battle stars, and he's a doctor. He got the silver star for ••• oh, I forgot to tell you that he's got a bronze star with 2 clusters as well, that means 3 bronze stars. What had happened was these guys were hit so hard that they couldn't get the casualties back to them, so he moved them up to the lead company's headquarters. Now, the lead company's headquarters is what I told you about the guy telling you "go here a quarter mile and see what you can get •. " whereas the other was way the hell gone and couldn't get his casualties back. So, he moved up there and then he got hit in the arm, and refused to leave. He said "if you get me a replacement, then I'll get out of here ... So, what they did was wra~ something around this arm. When you get bullets flying through your company headquarters, then you're in pretty bad shape. Anyway, that's where he got his silver star. He was a different kind of guy. If you were writing him up, you'd be writing somebody. But, be that as it may, anyway, I heard that Willey was up there, and that the 32nd was getting the hell knocked out of them. 3ut, it didn't mean anything to me; that's what I was trying to say. A fight is no bigger than what you see. His story is .•• again if you take all those horrible moments, all that horrible time, you know, he might have had 10 days. I'm talking about concentrated combat, you know, where you're in it, period. The rest of it, hell, once , I sat on a hill for about 5 days, and I think I fired 15 rounds. The infantry was up there, and had no orders to move, sat there •• run out on reconnaissance patrol, run into noth1ngl come back and report nothing ••• and that's combat. I think in those 5 days we might have had 3 shells fired at us, but it either fell |
