Show Rose (1/17/83) page 38 of a r eunion . They had come out of high school together and had worked at their first job in the same place. The girl I was with had been sent here by a custo~er who was Stoval's Department Store here then, and she got sent here to be a sort of accountant or something like that for the Stoval Department Store that was here. I got to talking with this guy and his name was Lincoln Seelig, an he came here to settle; he went into the collection business. He came here to settle and then he found a building he wanted to buy and he hired me to do the closing on it, and it was with Tom Gaddi Realty Investment Company. I handled the job, and this Gaddis •• t first time I'd ever seen him, the first time I'd ever met him, and his real estate office was downstairs from Harry Goldberg's in the Felt Building here in Salt Lake City, and we were on the 4th or 5th floor or whatever it was. Gaddis asked me what I knew about searching abstracts, so I said,"Oh, I have quite a bit of experience searching abstracts. I searched this one•. He said, "Yeah, I like the work you did. How much will you charge me to if uf\~ search an abstract tf I can g1 ve yort.,?" I don't r~'.;;~~f ,i""' said $2 a month or $30 a month, or something like that, and I was thinkin if he said $20 or $30 a month I could make a living. I said, •we what's it worth to you?•, and he said, •$2.50 an abstract•. I didn't even stop to think, and I said, "I'll do it•. I learned a lot later,..you see, his business was. if you're in a financial bind, and in those days everybody was, that he would take title t your house and on his credit he would get you a loan at a finance company with his credit, his signature. Then he would sell you back your house for some percentage, not an exorbitant percentage |
