| Abstract |
Rose (b. 1911) recalls growing up, school, religious influences, anti-Semitism, stories of his father's life, and participating in amateur boxing. He also talks about his separation from the Jewish community, practicing law during the Depression, prayer in the schools, and the issue of the separation of church and state. Other topics covered include Hitler, World War II, the differences between German and other ethnic Jews, serving in the army, interfaith marriages, and Jewish identity. 128 pages. |

Ftnally when I was about 8 years old or seven year,, or something like that, I went to my grandmother, and I stayed with my grandmother until the month after my barmitzvah and she died. Then I went to another a6nt, and I stayed with her until I finished high school, and then I joined my mother in New York City. What part of New York? The Bronx. When I went to live with my grandmother, that was in . Bayon, New Jersey. Do you remember what it was like moving around all that much? There was no strangeness about it because ~Y mother and her sisters were very, very close. To this very, very day, ~Y cousins and I, the surviving cousins and !,are very close. We visit back and for I went to Washington twice 1n the last year to visit cousins and they got together in one celebration and brought everybody from all the generations down to a 2 month old baby in one house on a given day simply because I was coming there. We have this kind of close relationship. We talk on the telephone to either one rela-tive or another calls me or I call them, and I'm only about 5 or months away from any one of my cousins in terms of the last com-munication, including the women who were widows of my cousins, I mean this is how close the relationship grew to the point that we don't make that distinction. What distinction? The distinction between who is or who was my cousin. I'm saying |
