Show Rose (1/20/?3) page l A Mr. K Mr. R Mr. K said, "I will not take it". The Jewish kid didn't want to appear different, so the Jewish kid took it. The war over the King James version of the bible until the kid got home with it, but that Catholic kid just wasn't about to take that book. Well, the upshot of that was, the sunerintendant of schools for the whole state put this directive out that they were never permitted again to pass bibles in the schools. Now, he couldn't handle somebody standing outside the playground and hussling the kids on their way home out the gates, but no ~lace on the school grounds. In Ogden this case was actually that a principal had gone into the class with this fellow with the bibles and told the teacher to help this guy to get the bibles out, and that was nut to a stop, too. I had anothe case with bibles where a guy went down into the lunchroom and was r: :n· given table space, you know, in the lunch~ so he could hand them all out there to the kids in the school. Well, we think that for a little while we made some kind of impact. Did you ever wonder to yourself in a personal way •• you're a reli-gious person, at least to some degree •• did you ever wonder about the good you were doing? I ~ean, did you ever question yourself 'how could religion be taught?', and in what way are we teaching it? Did that ever enter your mind? Sure, I've got books on how to teach religion in schools ••• not boo ~ I don't want to go overboard with this, I have the cases that set up certain guidelines by which it should be governed. When you were a young person here after law school, you ha* a choice of two congregations to go to, people have defined B'Naie Israel as being the congregation where "~or more enlightment~ went |
