Every so often when they didn't have a job for them, they went back to soldiering and retraining as soldiers, but they weren't much of an outfit. I stayed with them,I guess, another 5 months before the 25th, thank God, came back and all of a sudden I'm doing my amphibious training again! Son-of-a-gun. Yeah, I'm doing my amphibious training again and the next thing I know is L we're on boats and we're headed for luzon in the Philippines. I went through that one and we had 6 straight months in action. Then we got pulled out and we were in rest areas over there. What was action there. What does that mean? You fight a war, I mean, that's war. For 6 months we were on land in combat, 180 days or 183 days, something like that. Did you have a group of men under you, or were you •.• ? Oh, sure, I had a group of men. Then there's another story. You see, there are all these little stories. Usually an outfit going into combat gets what they call "beefed-up" to 110% of strength. The 25th division went in probably BS( of strength. Now, this is give or take 5~,alot of this is latrine rumor or a lot of this is half substantiated by educated guess. Certainly in our outfit, fo whatever it's worth, all of my training in the army had been with instruments, instruments and operations. If you become expert without actually doing it for marbles or for chips, I was reasona L exnert in these areas. The day before we landed in •uzon, maybe 2 days before, 2 nights before -we landed at dawn, and we didn't land, we were not the initial landing, we went in s+2, that means 2 days after ship. Bbybe the day that the first landing was made 1 |
