| Abstract |
Rose (b. 1911) recalls growing up, school, religious influences, anti-Semitism, stories of his father's life, and participating in amateur boxing. He also talks about his separation from the Jewish community, practicing law during the Depression, prayer in the schools, and the issue of the separation of church and state. Other topics covered include Hitler, World War II, the differences between German and other ethnic Jews, serving in the army, interfaith marriages, and Jewish identity. 128 pages. |

But not necessarily less enlightened. No, but why did you think Montefiore? Well, I think that was my background. -t ,., . . · . '1 1 '~ . ~ I ••• at ~ontefi~re? No, B'Naie Israel, but bothers me of Kol Ami. What's that? You go to synagogue in the winter time, and the services are what ?:)0 or 8:00? Yeah. That's 2 or 3 hours after the sun is down on a Frida~ight, and they're going to light candles. That goes on in the synagogue now. I don't complain about it, it's the only ball game in town. If I want to play, I gotta play by the rules that the majority has set up. Some of those things have no relation to religion as such, it~ just a beautiful ceremony that they don't want to give up, and they will still tell it to you. But, boy, they get somebody up there with pomp and with ceremony to give a real fanciful blessing on the lighting of the candles and light the candles after sun down. But, that's what they used to do over there. I once went in what to me was, I think it was B'Naie Brith Friday night at the old temple, and I was asked to read the first paragraph of the crisna . |
