Well, let ~e give vou this picture, because I've been through this before, so I'T not going to have any trouble explaining to you what combat was like as I saw it ••• 180 days in one campaigne, and if you actually took and concentrated everything that you call fighting in a war, in the sense that in one way or another you're in contact with the enemy where you're in the position to receive as well as deliver, I honest to God can't tell you that I was in _,..,.,"'' 1- I ~ , t lr:- ... ~ '\~ I the war for any more than 3 days, S day;. 1 $~ We had one day that we got shelled, shelled badly. As a matter of fact, it was 2 days after Roosevelt died. God, it seemed like those shells were never going to stop flying, it seemed like it had been going on for hours ... it was 7 minutes on the clock. Ti~e just stretched out like it was going to go on forever. The reason I know it was 2 days after Roosevelt died, is that when it was over that quiet, that silence was totally thick, and here comes this voice out of a foxhole "we want Roosevelt back, this never happened when he was in office". I get a laugh about that even now, the sense of humor in any circumstances. That's when I got a face full of gravel. I don't know if I still have the marks, you may not be able to see them. For a long time I had a blue mark down here and little scratches over here. I thought I lost my eye; I was full of blood. I couldn't see past the blood, but got hit with gravel because a |
