I thought to myself, "well, I'm in their place and I can't make a fuss a bout it", so I took my yamak off. I want you to know, you can call it superstition, you can call it anything you want, but s help me ~ Hanna, I expected any minute the hand of God to come out o heaven and grab me by the back of the neck and throw me the hell out of theret Oh, I'll tell you something, I was up there cringin and all the while I was reading it I was thinking •what the hell did I take my yamak off?" This was in B'Naie Israel or B'Naie Brith? No, this was a B'Naie Brith night at the temple B'Naie Israel on .A the Friday night service because · every year B'NJe Brith has a service. They had it again this year and they asked me to do it again, and it's the first ti~e since, and I did it again and this ti~e I had a yamak on. But,I want to telLyou something, if I didn have a job that night I don't think I would have stayed for the services because I can't stand to see those candles lit. I mean, actually it negates what you're doing. It negates the s1gn1f1canc of the lighting of the candles 8nd here in a place of worship is where we did it. In the first place, I'm not even sure that the lighting of the candles is part of the synagogue ceremony, but the ceremony in the home. I'd never seen it in the synagogue when I was younger. Well, there's a reason for it. It's supposed to be the ••• that's the reason they light candles and ~ake a kiddish is so that if a stranger is in town he's got his candles lit and got his kiddish made. So, that's the background for it. Certainly, you know kid- |
