Show ^red Reimherr. Brian and I were beginning to wort well together and he still alerts me to his continuing efforts. My Group does not begin to function as Sierra Club people do, yet, <jc/«ot btlrfTiJtty O . K . How do you see our preparing a newsletter? Not on a scheduled, periodic basis, but frequently enough - every couple of months-that it will help in developing and keeping a Group's effort going and being increasingly effective? Jim Talley, Salt Lake City, Trout Unlimited Chairman, puts out a Trout Unlimited newsletter which deals with tying flies, coming meetings and fishing activities. Reimherr writes a section on CUP. This is good - but it doesn't reach non-fly fishermen and, if our Group Is to develop, we have to expand beyond the fishermen who largely are not activists, a^tL •*ty«*t *^J /VJO-WK^V^ >2*/~^iy&£U <4 Cctt " For a coming newsletter, could you prepare for us a statement on where we are now in Congressional and Administration thinking and efforts, and probable developments in Washington - once Congress returns. I could ask Brian Beard to have a "column" or signed statement coming from Utah, which would update efforts he is dealing with. I could then get whoever in our Group wants to prepare something - Hartt Wixom, the newspaper writer, on trout streams, Reimherr, on losses of trout streams, Beth Duncan on wildlife, etc. - to provide paragraphs. I think a two page, legal size newsletter would be what we should aim for. If Brian would prefer, we could put this out jointly. (There is a certain element of "eliteness" on the part of the Sierra Club, you recognize. They won't get lost in other Groups' efforts'.) We will need to use other Environmental Group's mailing addresses, anyway. Dick Carter^may be a problem since he is trying to separate wilderness classification on the Uintas from CUP issues - for political reasons. He is trying to get Utah Congressional delegations and the Governor on the side of wilderness and is afraid they'll be turned off if we take the CUP away from them. He even wanted me to tie in our political efforts with his wilderness efforts but that is wholly impossible. However, we'll have to work around this situation the best way we can. I think we need to proceed this way of a newsletter and developing our Group's effectiveness, whether you or we or anyone comes up with a legal suit or not. We're up against some pretty shrewd oppostion and, as you say, legal suits don't necessarily' win or stop projects. Please think about this proposition and let me know how you see it can work out. Without your cooperation, none of us have the know-how, at present, to tie in with the larger picture of Washington-based water developments. I don't think you need to worry that we would compromise your efforts. If there were no-no's - you'd let us know. And, you could sign your statement |
