A Continued right on up the river until we came to the mouth of Castle creek, and there we stayed over night, and the next morning found a river boat in the willows, had been pulled up into the willows, and we got this boat out and re- calked it and got it in shape; it was about four feet across at the top, and I would think fourteen or fifteen feet long, with one set of cars. We took that boat, and put it in the river, and went down the river to the mouth of Nigger Bill canyon, and transferred our cargo from the raft into this boat, and took the boat back up the river to the mouth of Castle creek. Q How did you get the boat back up? A With the exception of the two rapids, one just below Castle creek, and another rapid at the mouth of what is known as Salt wash, we rowed this boat with the one set of oars in the quiet waters, and as far as we could on to the rapids, and then we used a tow line on the boat about fifteen or twenty feet long, and used also what is known as a pipe pole; one of us would pole the boat along the shore through the rapids, |
