Show 7218 Shafer- D 5198 line when we would come to these rapids; they weren't so bad but what one of us, as I said, would pull the boat up while the other would hold it out with a pipe pole; we passed up long the shore line. Q Aside from the hard going over that stretch and your towing of your boat, what other difficulties or obstructions to navigation did you encounter? A We didn't have any trouble with the boat. As I say, we could row the boat with the exception of those rapids. Q Did you observe any shallow channel at the rapids or at any other place along that are between Castle Creek and Nigger Bill canyon? A No sir, we never had any difficulty in regard to getting aground or anything like that; we always found plenty of water to run in, running our raft down the river and coming up with the boat we always found sufficient water to carry the load up the river. Q What time of the year was this that you took the trip on the river you just described? A It was, I think -- I could almost be sure in saying it was the 12th of November. Q It was in the month of November, anyway? A Yes sir, the early part of November. Q Do you know whether the water was at a low or high or intermediate stage? What stage was it from you observation? |
