Show 7219 Shafer- D 5199 A I didn't consider it a high stage; that is not considered a season when we have a high stage of water; our high stage of water is in June and July. Q From your observation what would you say were the depths of the river at that time in the channel, the general depths? A We never measured the water; we didn't measure it; but on this raft at one end we had an oar- lock; we used a steering oar, an oar perhaps ten feet long, I would say; this was secured to this oar- lock, and in passing over the rapids we used this to steer our raft through the waters of the rapid; we never experienced any trouble with this oar; I would just naturally think the water was at least two feet deep at any point of these rapids, because this oar, as I remember, stood about forty- five degrees. Q Did you make any observation, or have you any recollection so that you could give the court an approximate idea of the draft of that boat loaded as it was? A I don't believe I quite understand you. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Do you remember how much water the boat drew when it was loaded? A This raft? BY MR. FARNSWORTH: Q Not talking about the raft, -- the boat. |
