Show 7359 Wolverton- D 5339 BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Mr. Wolverton, what was the reason for your changing from the stern wheel to the side wheel? A With the stern wheel in going up over the top of the riffles as the boat dropped over on to the leveler part of the stream it had a tendency to pull the stern wheel out, and it would spin, the boat would drop back a little. Q You mean the fall of the water going over the riffles raised up the stern; is that what you mean? A No; the water was comparatively level at the top of the riffles; when the boat came up sort of an incline, slight, of course, but it was an incline, and got down on to the level water, it pulled the stern wheel out. Q That would be going up the river, or going down? A Going up. Q Going up? A Yes sir. Q Well, now did the change to the side wheel reduce the draft of your boat, or did it make any change one way or the other in the draft? A It reduced the draft slightly, because the weight of the stern wheel was on one end. Q What do you think the draft was when you carried an ordinary load with the side wheel? A It would be three inches less, at least, three inches less than when we were carrying a stern wheel. |
