Show SYMPHONY features Alan Ball as soloist for Rachmoninoff Piano Concerto Modulating from major to minor, executing difficult-to-maneuver technical feats, engaging in private practice sessions with emphasis on the personal development of the instrumentalist, members of the University Symphony Orchestra accumulated a wealth of musical skill- to combine in the presentation of selections ranging from classical, established works to more contemporary controversial pieces. Under the direction of Dr. David A. Shand, the ninety piece group performed regularly in a Sunday afternoon concert series and presented a number of selections in each of several local area high schools. The highlight of 1968 for the symphony was a tour through Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Nevada, and Southern Utah during which musicians relaxed from the studious rigors of winter quarter with another type of rigorous activity: rehearsals and a tight concert series. During the year they performed such works as Rachmoninoff's Piano Concerto on a theme by Paganini with Alan Ball, soloist. Dr. David A. Shand/Conc/t/ctor 179 |
