LDSSA represents all LDS students on campus The Latter-day Saint Student Association is designed to correlate all phases of the LDS Church as they relate to the college student. It began when in 1965 Elder Paul H. Dunn was commissioned by the leaders of the Church to investigate problems faced by the Latter-day Saint college youth and to recommend possible solutions to these problems. This year the program covered all colleges in Utah, California, and Idaho State in Pocatello. Over 9,000 students on this campus are LDS, therefore members of LDSSA. Special objectives of LDSSA include assisting returned missionaries, returning servicemen, young married students, and new college students to become more effective students. Five thousand members of the LDSSA are enrolled in the Institute program which has as its objective the teaching of various aspects of religion to students. LDSSA featured special firesides in the spring and fall inviting all campus LDS students. The fall fireside this year featured Elder Thomas S. Monson and speakers from the LDS student council centering around the theme "A Responsible Generation." Forum was a project providing a stimulating hour each Friday noon, featuring noted speakers such as J.D. Williams, Dr. Truman Madsen, and others. Devotional provided an hour of inspiration each Thursday with speakers and musical performances. Worship Service was a traditional quiet hour the third Sunday of every month at the Assembly Hall. The Returned Missionary Seminar with the theme of Looking Ahead held in January served to orient missionaries into college life with a lecture on the institute program, extracurricular campus activities, the military, and available employment. 223 |
