Show DEBATERS discuss poverty at Harvard, Linfield, USC The Debating Utes, the forensic counterpart to Utah's runnin' redskins piled up an impressive victory string during the year. Addressing themselves to origins, problems, and cures of poverty in the United States, the squad journeyed across the nation speaking in tournaments^ from the Harvard meet in Cambridge, Massachusetts through the Western Debate Tournament in McMinvilie, Oregon to the University of Southern California at Los Angeles with a trip included to Southern Utah's high schools. The debaters divided their time bet- ween four man oxford debates and individual events as oratory and extemp speeches, and less common competitive activities such as radio speaking, oral interpretation, job interviews, Lincoln-Douglas and cross-examination debate. The University Forensics program, under the direction of veteran director Prof. George Adamson and his coaching staff Miss Joan Orr, Mrs. Shirley Jones, Mr. Dick Birrell, Mr. T. Lee Burnham and Mr. Peter Coyne groomed sophomore and junior division debaters for senior division competition.
