Show 1,000,000 volumes; houses stomp as final gesture level. Designed for receiving decks, cataloging areas, a multi-purpose lecture hall and classroom space, the first level houses the technical services personnel and equipment of the library. Areas receiving the greatest public use display stained wood panels; many study areas feature deep pile carpeting. Building planners designed stack space with no permanent walls, so that the 300,000 square feet of floor space can be used most efficiently, providing flexibility and mobility in rearranging the stacks. Each University discipline has its own designated area in the library, making it possible for students to find all the books in a given subject area in separate areas of the library. Students have a computerized system of audio and video tapes at their command as well as books. LEFT: Old George Thomas reading room displays the grace and dignity of the huge, cool, slightly misty second floor with its vaulted ceiling. RT: The foyer exchanges study tables and familiar checkerboard floor of the books for enthusiastic stompers in the final farewell to the old place. 53 |
