Show J. I. SWIGART "All education is self-activity" "All education is self-activity; the student teaches himself. The professor merely acts as a coach to teach him how to think. Physics is a way of thinking about space, time and distribution of energy in the universe. It is better for a student to learn how to think than it is for him to know all there is to know about physics." Through this philosophy of education and through lectures highlighted by colorful experiments designed to provoke thought, Dr. J. I. Swigart has stimulated thousands of University of Utah students to an interest in physics. Although his demonstrations must be revised from year to year, Dr. Swigart believes in them as illustrations of the uniform, universal, and continuous laws of nature and executes them with the expertise and enthusiasm of the seasoned dramatist. With a B.S. degree at Illinois Wesleyan University and an M.S. and PhD at Indiana University, Dr. Swigart has served for thirty-six years as a member of the University's faculty. He spends his summers working on Utah's Upper Air Research project, but he considers himself first and foremost a professional teacher of physics rather than a man deeply involved in the field of research. 126 |
