Show Greeks seem to agree that the system is the greatest. It is a living, progressing unit, dependent upon new ideas and fresh blood brought continually into the system by its pledges. Rush has been designed specifically to enable rushees to acquaint themselves with the Greek system and individual houses. Each year about 700 rushees try to discover the fact or fallacy of the system and from general orientation to Pledge Sunday the heat is on for the rushees to sell themselves to the houses and the houses to sell themselves to the rushees. Cowboy, circus and African parties abound throughout the week to impress the rushees with the definite possibilities of future fun. By the end of the week the rushee begins turning green and slightly nauseous every time he or she is asked again "Where'd you go to high school?" or "What is your major?" They come to appreciate some astute active who says, "I'm so tired, let's just sit here and not talk." All night parties, all night "membership selection" meetings and aching smile muscles characterize this hectic week that has come to be known as rush. All the gardening, new paint and house cleaning pay off as Pledge Sunday arrives and the fraternities are assured of yet another class of pledges to teach the significance of brother and sisterhood. 269 |
