Show Dr. Lowell L. Bennion//Assoc/ate Dean, Dr. Virginia P. Frobes/Dean, Peter D. Grundiossen/Assistant Dean DEANS OF STUDENTS alter frosh orientation 1968 was a formative year for the office of the Deans of Students, Virginia P. Frobes, Lowell L. Bennion, and Peter D. Grundfossen. Concentrating on improving the University experience for incoming freshmen, the Deans completely revamped freshman orientation, making it a year-long process beginning with a two-day total immersion in University surroundings. Freshmen were divided into groups of six hundred and each group spent two days on campus before classes began, slept in the residence halls, met several times a day with their respective reference groups, and completed their registration for autumn quarter. The Deans of Students played a major role in the remodeling of the general education program which is now divided into two parts, academic counselling and curriculum building function. They navigated one project involving all University students in 1968, the project for the expansion of the Union Building. Begun during winter quarter, the $1 million renovation includes plans for an auditorium and a new Panorama Room, new kitchen facilities, a relocation of the Student Activities Center and the publications offices, and a TV world room where world news will be constantly projected minutes after it occurs. 116 |
