Show automobile. Regardless of their problems, they enjoyed seeing people they had not seen for years, and of knowing more about the Uintah Basin. They always felt that the Vernal trip was a fun trip even though it had been troublesome . In 1917 the Overland was turned in on another and larger car, a Willys-Knight seven-passenger car. John K gave it the same treatment he had given the Overland, and used it as a hauling vehicle, also. When the family planned to take a ride in the car a good cleaning job was necessary each time, and the girls declared something should be done about it. Then as pick-up trucks became available, and John K could see the wisdom in so doing, he bought a truck and the touring car became just that--a family vehicle--and everyone was happy. Prior to that time he had used a buck-board or a wagon to make regular mountain or desert range trips to camp, and very soon he found it convenient to use the pickup for all such work. THE TEST The final test that any car or truck had to pass before John K would buy it was to have the salesman drive successfully up a hill in Moroni without shifting gears. Having to shift standard gears when one was only halfway up a hill was a worrisome business, and dangerous, in those earlier years of driving a car. 162 |
