Show John K was excited by all of the progress made in his town, and he particpated wherever possible, if only in paying special assessments or working poll taxes when he was in town. There were two L. D- S. wards in Mt. Pleasant, and a Presbyterian congregation. By 1895 a number of lodges were in existence: the Masonic, the I.O.O.F., and the A.O.U.W. The Social Hall of the church square had sufficed for recreational purposes during the town's earliest years, when the upstairs or second story of a new red brick building on the southwest corner of the old fort property was used as a theater and dance hall. The building's first floor housed the branch Z.C.M.I. and later became the Union Store. In 1894, the Union Pavilion was built east of the Union Store on east Main Street, by Andrew Madsen and C. W. Anderson. It was 40 by 140 feet with an arched roof supported without a pillar, and was rated among the best dance halls in the territory. The wedding dance of Katie and John K was a very special event held in the pavilion. Their friends and well-wishers who attended were numerous, and the newlyweds were happy and excited. There was no honeymoon trip. For a short while the newlyweds lived in the old farm house in the Bottoms since John K's mother had moved to town to more fully enjoy her friends, her children, and her church, After Katie spent a brief time on the desert with John K the next winter, they rented a small house in the southwest part of town, then moved to another on north State street. 75 |
