Show purebred rams I consider that any breeder who is ashamed to announce the weights of his sheep can only be ashamed because they are undersized. I want to compliment the Rambouillet breeders, particularly from Utah, for the improvement in weights and wool qualities of their range ewes since 1900 when the very largest and best bands of range ewes would not exceed 100 to 105 pounds. With an increase in use of large purebred Rambouillet bucks, outstanding, and with extreme length and depth of body, breeders have secured a large increase in size of their range ewes throughoue inter-mountain country. This increase is from 100 to 130 pounds-*-or nearly a pound of increase per year, 9 This observation, recognition, and commendation from a prominent range man on the matter of improvement gains via the efforts of ram breeders was an indication of what many range men of the time would also have known through their own experiences, John K appreciated this letter and it was no doubt of value to all of the breeders who read the magazine. A HEALTHY WOOL MARKET This account would be incomplete without mentioning Summer Streets-the central trading center of the woolen industry, including warehouses. Articles in the magazine were enlightening: A heavy volume of business has been transacted on Summer Street in July. 223 |
