Show Mt. Pleasant. The winter range usually furnished enough browse for the winter months at that time on the west desert. Before long, John K obtained winter grazing rights east of Axtell, Utah, in hill country there. He harvested excellent alfalfa crops from some of the ranch land, especially from a cove (called Horse Heaven) and from nearby fields. Several teams of good work horses, sturdy mowing machines, rakes, and hayracks, operated by reliable men, made the haying season a most productive and interesting experience. Gradually, motor power replaced the horse power to advantage in haying and other ranch operations IRRIGATION ACTIVITIES Water was not plentiful in Sanpete, so proper use of all available water was essentail. The same rule held on the newly acquired upper part of the ranch that John K had stressed on the lower one. "In irrigation season, all other work is secondary," was his firm belief. Water was too precious to be wasted and he learned to utilize it well and trained his men to make the best possible furrow use of it. He was an officer in various irrigation companies. Being president of some of them, in his turn, brought to him a deep appreciation for service in the interest of conservation. The Coal Fork Irrigation Company, the Pleasant Creek Irrigation Company, the Mountain Tunnel Irrigation Company, and the Twin Creek Irrigation Company were all very important to him. 185 |
