Show Meals were usually cooked by whichever man was available as meal time drew near. The regular men who spent year after year at the lambing sheds in season were: Heber Anderson, Sherman Smith, Thomas Hutchison, Al Simons and his brother Arthur (Doc) Simons, Roy Romero, and sometimes Udell Hutchison (Tom's son), and Dean Anderson (Heber's son). Loftin Johnson and Jay Hafen worked a few years intermittently with those regular men wherever they were able to give the most assistance. Any others were usually employed briefly. During lambing season, everything moved like well-oiled wheels of a clock. Early rising at 5 A.M. started the day's routine. After filling mangers with fresh hay, grain, and pellets, the men returned to the cahin for a hearty breakfast. They later attended to labelling and tagging, an ever demanding task, and to hauling hay from fields where stacks of it had b.een purchased. There seemed to be any number of small jobs hesides bringing new lambs into pens. During the first season at the cove, Carol, Frank's wife, moved into the cabin for awhile to cook for the men, but when she left for home again they took their turns as before. A few years later Pearl decided to go to the sheds and take over the cooking for the men. Even with two children she preferred being there with Bill rather than being alone at home for all of the spring months he was required to be away from his family. It also saved on expenses of her own household for herself and the two children they had by that time CBillye Virginia and John K, M. Olsen)., 199 |
