Show APARTMENT LIVING It was a new experience for this family to live in an apartment after living in a small town all of their lives. The first place in which they lived was the Brucetown Apartments, just east of the Carleton Hotel on South Temple Street. The rooms seemed dark and small after the free spaces they had been used to. Then Virginia located a larger roomed and lighter place in the Miller Apartments that were directly across the street from the north Temple gate. It was a good location and only the back rooms were dark. Markets and downtown were close and the family enjoyed living there. While they were in that location John K bought a large mahogany Victrola and very soon they all became acquainted with Galli-Currci, Enrico Caruso, John McCormack, Schumann- Heinck, Harry Lauder, and various other fine singers of the period. Sousa's band music also proved to be popular with them. The winter of 1917-1918 Pearl and Aleen attended the Lafayette School (.seventh and eighth grades). The school building at that time was on the west side of North State Street and north of North Temple Street, facing east. A few years later it was destroyed by fire, and rather than rebuild on the hill slope the school authorities decided that the new building should be built around the corner on 166 |
