The first horses the family used on the homestead were Mag and Jane. Mag was a small black mare weighing about 700 pounds. Jane, a bay, was around 1100 pounds, and a very good work horse. When necessary, the two horses were paired together-a strange, mismatched team. But mostly they were used singly. After Mag foaled and her colt had grown John K broke him for a riding horse. It was usually his responsibility to ride for a midwife, or a doctor, in emergencies. When a horse kicked Will (William) in the head, a very deep gash resulted, and he lay for days in critical condition. Gradually, after many remedies were tried and abandoned, others proved to be effective when he rallied and recovered. Of such emergencies were their homestead years filled, and John K saw his mother's faith tried many times. A CONTRIBUTION In 1883, when John K was eleven years of age, his mother sent him to Manti with a yoke of oxen, to assist in any way he could be of use in the construction of the temple being built there.
